Supplier Spotlight - Supporting Our Friends at Basha

At Decorator’s Notebook we have a  passion for ethical and sustainable products. We love things made by individual craftspeople and we take time in sourcing new and interesting homeware and gifts.

We always strive to keep our collections in line with our founding ethos: a refined range of home accessories and gifts that combine quality natural materials with thoughtful design, skilled craftsmanship and interesting origins. That could mean intriguing story behind the maker’s inspiration, the revival of a rural craft, a social initiative or a product that makes use of recycled materials.

Our globally-inspired throws, quilts and bedspreads are lovingly made by talented artisans worldwide.

This month, we thought we’d share a little information about our wonderful quilt and home accessory supplier Basha based in Bangladesh.

Women who are trafficked or vulnerable to trafficking are eager to leave the trauma of their past and build better lives for themselves and their children. Basha exists to respond to the unique needs of these communities and to ensure women recover and are healthy before they transition into the workforce.

Friends of Basha provide full holistic support, like counselling and psychiatric care, as well as life skill training and a safe home for women and girls to live in. The next generation is equally important and Basha provide children the opportunities their mothers did not have. More than 120 children receive education in Basha’s day care centres, as well as daily tutoring, school support and nutritious food.

When ready, women have the opportunity to be employed by their social enterprise partner Basha Boutique. Women can then take on full-time employment in an environment that fosters their entrepreneurial spirits. Basha Boutique has grown from 13 women in one small Dhaka flat to more than 150 full-time production workers in five production centres throughout Bangladesh.

Each kantha item is handmade by these wonderful women, a thriving social enterprise that helps build a new life making kantha quilts and accessories. As beautiful products emerge from discarded cloth, broken lives are made whole again, stitch by stitch.

Basha vintage sari kantha quilts are all one-of-kind, with a unique cotton sari on each side. Our vintage sari kantha quilts are reversible and no two are ever the same. Each one comes with a personal embroidered name label of the lady who made it.

We have a wide range of amazing quilts, shoulder bags, cosmetic bags and shawls, all made with love and perfect for that special treat or gift.
