Indigo Shibori Cushion: Lateral

Exquisite shibori cushion

Shibori work of this quality is highly sought-after
Dyed with pure, plant-derived indigo
Fair trade and handmade by artisans in Bangladesh
45 cm x 45 cm. Complete with feather pad. Dry clean.

Real Bengal indigo yields a blue so deep you could get lost in it! To make this beautiful cushion, hand-loomed khadi cotton is skillfully stitched and pleated using an ancient Japanese technique called shibori. When the cloth is unfurled the exquisite patterns are revealed. This shibori cushion cover is embroidered all over with minute kantha stitch and the edge is finished with tiny blanket stitch in contrasting citrus-yellow thread, also done entirely by hand. Our shibori indigo throws and cushions are made by a life-changing fair trade co-operative in which every artisan owns a share. Click to see more shibori cushions and co-ordinating throws.

  • “Before, life was very distressing. I had hardly any work and had to depend on others to live. Now I have a community at Living Blue, I have paid off my debts, built a house and my children go to school” – Sona Rani Roy, master quilter

Living Blue is an inspirational co-operative of 182 artisans in a remote area of Northern Bangladesh. They create beautiful throws and cushions using complex Japanese tying techniques and intense indigo dye. Indigo is not just a colour: it’s a plant that creates hope, independence and a bright future.
